ATLANTA, GA – A recent data breach reported by Managed Care of North America, Inc. (MCNA) has affected nearly 9 million individuals across the United States. MCNA, a healthcare organization, became aware of an unauthorized party accessing its systems between February 26 and March 7, 2023.
The Atlanta-based company provides dental benefits and services for several state Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Programs. Kimberly Peretti, partner at the law firm Alston & Bird LLP, and MCNA’s outside counsel, submitted a notification to the Maine Attorney General Office detailing the breach.
The data compromised in the breach includes demographic information, such as full names, birth dates, addresses, and contact details. Additionally, Social Security numbers, driver’s license or other government-issued identification numbers, and health insurance information, including details related to dental and orthodontic care, were part of the exposed data.
The breach was discovered on March 6, 2023, when MCNA identified suspicious activity within its systems. Immediately upon discovery, MCNA acted to contain the threat and engaged a third-party forensic firm to investigate the incident and assist with remediation efforts. An extensive review was carried out to ascertain the extent of the data impact, and it was determined that personal information may have been compromised.
MCNA has made it clear that it takes privacy and security seriously. Following the discovery of the incident, the healthcare provider promptly launched a forensic investigation, contacted law enforcement, and took steps to both mitigate and remediate the incident.
As a response to this significant breach, MCNA has improved its security controls and monitoring practices. The organization has arranged to offer affected individuals credit monitoring services at no cost, provided through IDX. MCNA is also providing information to those affected on how they can protect their personal information.
As of now, there have been no reports of any actual or attempted misuse of the compromised information. However, MCNA is urging individuals affected by this breach to monitor their credit reports and account statements vigilantly. Any suspicious charges should be reported promptly to the respective companies.
This breach is one of the largest to hit the healthcare sector recently, underscoring the critical importance of cybersecurity in an increasingly digital world.
