Louisville, KY — PharMerica Corporation, a renowned healthcare organization, has disclosed a massive data breach affecting 5,815,591 individuals. The breach, attributed to an external hacking incident, occurred on March 12 and 13, 2023, and was discovered on March 21, 2023.

PharMerica Corporation is based in Louisville, Kentucky, and provides pharmacy services across the country. The breach compromised highly sensitive personal information, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, medications, and health insurance information.

According to Michael Waters, a shareholder of PharMerica and an attorney at Polsinelli PC who communicated the breach to the Maine Attorney General, the healthcare provider became aware of suspicious activities on its computer network on March 14, 2023. The organization quickly initiated an internal investigation and consulted cybersecurity advisors to examine and secure its computer systems.

The investigation revealed that an unknown third party had gained unauthorized access to PharMerica’s computer systems. Although there is no current evidence to suggest that the information has been misused, the nature of the data involved in the breach poses significant risks of identity theft and fraud for the affected individuals.

In a notification letter, PharMerica stated that it “values and respects the privacy of your information” and deeply regrets any inconvenience caused by this incident. To mitigate the risks and support the victims, PharMerica is offering complimentary one-year identity monitoring services through Kroll, a global leader in risk mitigation. The services will include credit monitoring, fraud consultation, and identity theft restoration.

PharMerica has also affirmed its commitment to enhancing technical security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
