  • Brightly Software announced a data breach impacting nearly 3 million SchoolDude application users.
  • The breach compromised user information such as names, emails, phone numbers, passwords, and school district names.

Brightly Software, an education technology company, announced today that an unauthorized third party accessed account information for nearly 3 million of its SchoolDude application users in a data breach discovered on April 28. According to a statement by the Cary, N.C.-based company, an investigation found that user data such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, passwords, and school district names were compromised in the April 20 breach.

Brightly Software's education platform affected by security breach.

In a notice to affected individuals, Brightly Software said it has reported the incident to law enforcement and hired outside cybersecurity experts from Crowell & Moring LLP to investigate and contain the breach. The company has also reset passwords for all 2,964,292 SchoolDude accounts and advised users to reset their passwords immediately to avoid potential phishing scams or other malicious activity.

Matthew Welling, a partner at Crowell & Moring LLP, said the company “sincerely regrets that this incident has occurred, and we are committed to addressing any user concerns.” He urged individuals to remain vigilant against suspicious messages and be cautious of unsolicited requests for personal information.

The data breach impacted nearly 3 million current and former Brightly Software customers, though the company stated that Social Security numbers and financial data were not accessed. Under Maine’s data breach notification law, the company was not required to notify consumer reporting agencies because fewer than 1,000 Maine residents were affected.

SchoolDude is an online platform used by K-12 schools and higher education institutions to manage maintenance work orders and related operations. Brightly Software acquired SchoolDude in 2019 as part of its education technology portfolio.

Individuals with questions about the SchoolDude data breach can contact Brightly Software at 1-888-220-5278 for more details. Cybersecurity experts recommend that anyone affected by a data breach should actively monitor accounts and personal records for signs of fraud or identity theft.

As a Siemens company, Brightly stands at the forefront of intelligent asset management solutions, leading the way towards more sustainable communities. Brightly combines a comprehensive suite of user-friendly software – encompassing CMMS, EAM, Strategic Asset Management, IoT Remote Monitoring, Sustainability, and Community Engagement – with customized consulting services and top-tier support.
