The city of Oakland, California is the latest victim of a ransomware attack, with LockBit 3.0 claiming responsibility. The cybercriminals have threatened to release sensitive data if the ransom is not paid by April 10, 2023. This development has put the residents of Oakland at risk, with the possibility of their personal information being leaked to the public.

Personal Information of Oakland City Employees Stolen in Ransomware Attack

In February 2023, the city experienced a cybersecurity incident involving malware that encrypted some of its systems. The city confirmed that some personal information, including names, addresses, driver’s license numbers, and Social Security numbers, of its employees was stolen from the compromised systems. Following the attack, the city declared a local state of emergency and took all its IT systems offline until the network was secured.

Although the attack did not impact the city’s 911 and emergency services, other systems had to be taken offline, including phone service and systems used to process reports, collect payments, and issue permits and licenses. The city is still working to restore affected systems and has enlisted the help of the FBI to investigate the incident. Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao said the city is optimistic that all systems can be restored in the next few weeks or maybe even the next month.
